Special Education Teaching, the only undergraduate program under our department, aims to train special education teachers who can work with students who need special education in various fields. With the decision of the Ministry of Education and Discipline Board dated 20.02.2014 and numbered 9, the fields of Teaching for the Mentally Handicapped, Teaching for the Hearing Impaired and Teaching for the Visually Impaired were combined under the name of Special Education. Later, it was decided by the Council of Higher Education to combine the undergraduate education given separately as Mentally Handicapped, Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired and Gifted / Talented Teacher Education in 2015, to be a new and single undergraduate program called "Special Education Teaching". As a result, our students who successfully complete our department will graduate with a Special Education Teaching Bachelor's degree.
The primary aim of the Special Education Teaching undergraduate program is to train teachers who are competent in personal, professional and social fields. Our primary goal is for our prospective teachers to graduate with the theoretical and applied knowledge and skills required by the age and with the awareness of professional responsibility. In addition, we aim for our graduate students to be educators who take an active role in the education of individuals who need special education, to be active and productive as independent individuals and to integrate with the society, and to be educators who can assume educational and guiding roles for the society in general, especially individuals with special needs. In order for our students to be educators who not only consume knowledge, but also produce and apply knowledge, it is aimed to develop projects for the education of individuals with special needs, participate in applications and produce products during their undergraduate education.
More than about ten percent of the general population in Türkiye is estimated to need special education because of various deficiencies. In addition, the rate of participation of children with special needs in education is gradually increasing. This situation raises the need for more educators in the field of special education. Considering the current situation in Türkiye it is known that graduates of the program numerically inadequate to meet the employment requirements in the field. Therefore, the employment of our graduates in all areas of special education is needed.
